Blogging aboard My Boat in Cape May - The Simple Halloween

Blogging Aboard My Boat in Cape May NJ

Blogging aboard My Boat in Cape May - The Simple Halloween

What ever happened to the simple Halloween Holidays of our early childhood? Halloween is a special time for children and adults to use their imagination and play. As Kids, every year we would look forward to using our imagination and dress up as our favorite hero, princess, or monster and pretend for the day.

Halloween Trick or Treat

In today's world we visit "Pop Up" Halloween Mega stores set up in unoccupied retail properties, selling the latest super hero costume, or we purchase our costume on line. It seems we've take the imagination out of "Simple" Halloween.

I have fond memories of riding the tailgate of my fathers station wagon in our neighborhood, trick or treating with my brothers as we stop from door to door under the watch of our parents to collect our Halloween bounty. Our costumes were hand made by our mom, who would visit the fabric store to purchase a pattern, and put together a hand sewn costume as we scavenged the house for our accessories.

Old Fashioned Halloween Costumes

The best part of Halloween was returning home and pouring out the bounty on the bedroom floor as we separated the pennies from the candy corn, and the apples from the chocolate bars. In those days your always had a favorite neighbor that gave away full size Hershey bars. After an evening of trick or treating we would stay up late, tell ghosts stories and entertain ourselves with flashlights and images of spooks bouncing off the ceiling wall as we lay in bed.

So this Halloween enjoy the simple things in life, take a walk in the fall evening and feel the brisk air of October in Cape May and imagine yourself as a child, trick or treating in your own neighborhood.

Lima Bean Festival at West Cape May

We spent a beautiful fall day at the West Cape May Lima Bean Festival. Cape May had a true Indian summer day with temperatures hitting 78 degrees. The fair was well represented with multiple food and craft vendors. In addition to the great food we sampled, the fair also provided free music in the park for everyone to enjoy. We sampled Lima Bean Chile and Lima Bean Soup and did some shopping in the park. Check out the pictures below, we especially enjoyed the Turtle Singer booth as the showcased two turtles over 25 years old, walking about on a turtle leash with the crowd.

Blogging on board my boat in Cape May

This past week end we checked out the Cape May Octoberfest Festival taking place on Jackson Street in Cape May. Although we had a mixed weather day this past Saturday, Sunday was a perfect day with little wind and a bright warm sunny day. As the summer seasons winds down here we have a full schedule of new things to do including the upcoming West Cape May Lima Bean Festival, Victorian Weekend and a new event in Cape May Dragon Boat festival which will take place on October 13th in Cape May Harbor. If you would like to check out a full schedule of Cape May and West Cape upcoming events please click here. If you are looking for some good ideas on things to do in the Cape May area check out this page.

Home made muffins aboard our boat while blogging in Cape May.
In addition to enjoying the beautiful weather of Cape May we did some on board cooking on the boat. We recently acquired a smaller convection oven to cook on board, which will allow us to bake and make full meals while resting at dockside. We enjoyed fresh home made muffins in the morning and were able to prepare a fully prepared dinner while watching the sunset slowly lower in the sky over the marina.

The Sun starts to fall on a cool fall day in Cape May.
The spots are starting to come in the back creeks as the water cools and the boys on the dock spend the day fishing and catching lots of bait fish with little effort. Crabbing season will be at it's peak season soon and we plan on enjoying some local fresh crab at table side.

What:   This wine festival, featuring 24 New Jersey wineries, will be held October 6 and 7 in a lovely, grassy field overlooking the ocean at the bustling and picturesque Cape May-Lewes Ferry (www.cmlf.com). The beautiful site is surrounded on every side by water, its serenity marked only by the arrival and departure of the ferries. Guests can sit and taste wine as ships port or stand at the Point of Cape May and look out at the scenery.      When:  Saturday and Sunday, October 6-7; 12 noon – 5:00 p.m.

More:    New Jersey has been producing wine since 1864. While perhaps not as well-known as other wine-producing states, New Jersey is home to many premiere varieties. Award-winning Chardonnay, Syrah, Marechal Foch, Viognier, Traminette, Merlot, Cabernet and dozens of others are produced right here. And, particularly unique to New Jersey wineries are an array of fruit wines such as raspberry, cherry and blueberry, which are exported by some New Jersey wineries all over the world. Because of the climate and conditions of the state, New Jersey wines are most often compared by viticulturists and enologists to the wines of France and Italy.
