Will the spike is gas prices affect your Labor Day weekend plans to Cape May?

Will the spike is gas prices affect your Labor Day weekend plans?

Gas Price Increase in New Jersey for Labor Day
The price of a gallon of gas is going up because of Hurricane Isaac, experts say. Drivers are being hit with the biggest one-day jump in gasoline prices in 18 months, just in time for the last hurrah of summer when the roads are typically packed. Blame Hurricane Isaac, experts say. The storm is battering the nation's oil and gas hub along the Gulf Coast, as well as drivers everywhere else.

The national average price of a gallon of gas jumped almost five cents Wednesday to $3.80, the highest ever for this date. Prices are expected to continue to climb through Labor Day weekend, the end of the summer driving season. "The national average will keep ticking higher, and it's going to be noticeable," Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst at Gasbuddy.com, told the Associated Press. The storm shut down several refineries along the Gulf Coast and others are operating at reduced rates. In all, about 1.3 million barrels per day of refining capacity is affected.  So, it's no surprise that drivers in Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida saw gas prices rise by a dime or more in the past week. But some states in the Midwest are suffering even more dramatic spikes. Ohio prices jumped 14 cents, Indiana prices soared 13 cents and Illinois prices jumped 10 cents on Wednesday alone according to the Oil Price Information Service.

Analysts say the prices are expected to drop after Labor Day. As Isaac fades away, the summer driving season ends, and refiners switch to cheaper winter blends of gasoline, stations owners should start dropping prices. "There is some very good relief in sight," DeHaan says. When Katrina hit in 2005, the national average for gas spiked 40 cents in six days and topped $3 per gallon for the first time. Isaac likely won't have the same result, though its full impact on the refineries is yet to be determined. The refineries are not expected to suffer long term damage. But refiners decided to shut down or run at reduced rates to protect their operations. Wednesday's jump of a nickel was the 10th biggest one-day jump on record, according to OPIS, and the biggest since the average price rose 6 cents on February 15, 2011 when turmoil in Libya was rising.

Dog lovers, mark your calendar for The Cape May Mutt Strutt

Dog lovers, mark your calendar for Mutt Strutt

Mutt Strut
Cape May Annual Mutt Strutt

CAPE MAY – The sixth annual Mutt Strut will take place on Saturday, Sept. 15 (rain date Sunday) on Cape May’s beachfront Promenade.

Charlie at the Cape May Dock

This annual event brings together dog owners and their canine companions for an enjoyable beachfront strut, the one time each year four-footed friends are permitted on the Promenade, other than the off-season.
Registration is required and will be held near Convention Hall on Beach Avenue near Gurney Street. The event takes place from 8 a.m. to noon.

GiGI Cinco

A donation of $1 per leg ($2/person, $4/dog) helps purchase K-9 ballistic vests for the Cape May County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit and supports area dog training and canine community programs of the event’s sponsor, Cape May County Dog Obedience Training Club (CMCDOTC).

According to the Cape Cay County Sheriff’s Office, “police K-9 vests are extremely important because K-9s are mostly deployed into high risk situations. They can get into places officers cannot and are often sent ahead to search for suspects. Unfortunately, K-9 vests are generally more expensive than human vests, but the K-9s deserve the same level of protection as their human partners.”
The event offers door prizes, giveaways, auction and children’s activity table, along with educational materials on dog ownership, training and adoption.
The Mutt Strut is part of the American Kennel Club (AKC) Responsible Dog Ownership Days, with over 600 events held in the US last year. For more information on the Mutt Strut, email cmcdotc@comcast.net or visit www.cmcdotc.com. For information on the programs and activities of the sheriff’s K-9 Unit visit www.cmcsheriff.net.

Congress Hall in Cape May: Timeless Hotel for a Classic Atlantic Resort

Congress-Hall-Cape-May-Porch Way before it became a reality show, the Jersey Shore was an elegant seaside resort for the East Coast, rivaling Saratoga and Newport. It still is. Meet Cape May, a Victorian jewel box town perched on the Garden State's southernmost tip. "Cape May surprised me with its genteel, vintage look and welcoming feel," says Guest Author Christine Lim, recently on assignment for Lux Travel in Cape May.
"It was refreshing to be in a place so sure of its identity, that doesn't feel compelled to be trendy, snobbish, or Jersey Shore-ish," she says. "Cape May's confidence makes guests feel they came to the right place. And come back they do, every year."
Christine profiled Cape May's historic and ever-captivating resort, Congress Hall. "It's old-school in the best way," she says."Congress Hall's rooms and restaurants have atmosphere you don't get from a decorator. And there's there's so much to do and see, you might not even get to the beach."
