CAPE MAY - The 2013 Cape May, NJ Calendar of Events sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) is here!

Jan. 19-April 14

"Celebrating Community Service: Black Fraternal, Social and Civic Organizations of Cape May County."

This exhibit presented by the Center for Community Arts (CCA) in collaboration with MAC will uncover the significance of black fraternal, social and civic organizations in African American social life. Because the African American community is often ignored by mainstream organizations, the Busy Bees, Sea Gals, Masons, Eastern Stars, Elks, the Black USO and CCA - to name a few - have emerged with the sole purpose of enhancing the lives of African Americans. In addition, black organizations can serve specific needs that only pertain to African American families. Hundreds exist nationwide with local chapters in cities and towns. The focus of this exhibit will be the Black organizations of Cape May County. Free admission. Gallery hours vary. Free exhibit opening Jan. 21 at 4 p.m. Co-sponsored by the Center for Community Arts (CCA) and the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC). For more information call 609-884-5404 or see www.capemaymac.org.

News Year Resolution, Save Money and Reduce Second Hand Power Consumption in Your New Jersey Shore Home or Business

If you own a Shore Home, Business or Boat in Cape May, did you know that one month of your Annual Utility Bill is Spent on Vampire Power Loss. You can save money while away from your Cape May shore house by using a simple power saving device in the form of a power strip. I have been using these devices for many years to shut off power consumption in my local office after our Personal Computers shut down for the day.
Save Power Vampire Power Consumption while you travel away from your Cape May Home or Business

One Month of Your Annual Utility Bill is spent on Vampire Power Loss

Did you know that the typical U.S. family spends about $1,900 a year on home utility bills? Unfortunately, a large portion of that energy is wasted. You can save up to one month of power consumption with a few simple changes outlined in the tips below. You can also help reduce your energy costs and save money every month while reducing vampire power. It can also help reduce your carbon footprint and have a positive impact on the planet. Each year, electricity generated by fossil fuels for a single home puts more carbon dioxide into the air than two average cars. Even a top-of-the-line, energy-efficient furnace will waste a lot of fuel if the ducts, walls, attic, windows, and doors are not properly sealed and insulated. Taking a whole-house approach to saving energy ensures that dollars you invest to save energy are spent wisely.

Vampire Standby Power According to the Department of Energy, “vampire energy loss” represents between 5 and 8 percent of a single family home’s total electricity use per year. On average, that equals one month’s electricity bill. Taken across the United States, it adds up to at least 68 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually—that’s the equivalent output of 37 typical electricity-generating power plants, costing consumers more than $7 billion. The result of all this wasted energy? More than 97 billion pounds of carbon dioxide seeping into the atmosphere each year. On a global scale, standby energy accounts for 1 percent of the world’s carbon emissions, according to Alan Meier of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California.

Turn off Your Computer Monitor, Printer and TV in standby mode. When your computer, plasma TV, or stereo is off, you probably think it is using as little power as possible. Fact is, these devices have high standby power use. What’s more, all of the peripherals connected to your computer — Printer, monitor, USB hub, scanner, DSL/cable modem, etc.—continue to consume “idle current” as well. There may be as many as 20 devices drawing standby power in your home.
