Sunset Beach Cape May NJ Flag Ceremony

The Evening Flag Ceremony is a 40 year Tradition at Sunset Beach

When visiting Cape May and Sunset Beach, be sure to leave at least one night open to join us for our evening flag ceremony held daily in season (May through September). We are immensely proud of this tradition which has been a staple of our area for over 40 years.

All of the flags that we fly at our mast are veterans' casket flags that families bring with them from their loved one's funeral. We are honored to fly them here at Sunset Beach. There is nothing as thought provoking than to watch the sun set over the Delaware Bay while taps plays and Old Glory is lowered for the evening. If you have not experienced this emotionally moving tradition, we invite you to be a participant in this celebration of being an American.

Garden State Light Removal Project Exit 9, 10 and 11

After decades of controversy, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority is preparing to remove the infamous lights, making the Parkway a true limited-access, free-flowing highway. The environmental impact study has just been approved, and the bidding process is expected to begin in the fall, setting the stage for a two-year construction project starting next year. Three overpasses will be built as part of the $125 million project.

Garden State Light Removal has Started
  • The project will replace the traffic signals at three at-grade intersections with full interchanges. Bridges will be built to carry the Parkway over Shell Bay Avenue (Interchange 9), Stone Harbor Boulevard (Interchange 10) and Crest Haven Road (Interchange 11). Ramps will provide continued full access between the Parkway and the local roads at all three interchanges. Drivers on the Garden State Parkway will no longer have to stop to let local traffic pass, and drivers on the local roads will no longer have to wait at a busy intersection to get to the other side of the Parkway
  • The construction work is expected to take about two years. Officials say during that time the Garden State Parkway will maintain full capacity. One of the first phases of the project involve building a diversionary road that will carry traffic while the overpasses are being constructed. The total price tag is $110 million.

Cape May – Lewes Ferry Announces Special Six Week Promotion -
“Local Loyalty” and “Spring Sail!” Promotional Fares Available through May 16, 2013

(Cape May, NJ) Today, Cape May – Lewes Ferry officials announced two new promotional fares: a new “Spring Sail!” fare and a new “Local Loyalty” fare. These special fares are only available for reserved round trip vehicle fares beginning April 1 and continuing through May 16, 2013. Round trip vehicle passage at these discounted rates is available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays during the six week promotion.

According to Heath Gehrke, Director of Ferry Operations, the six week promotion is the first of its kind at the Ferry. “I think we’re all tired of this winter weather,” Gehrke said. “With these promotional rates, we’re hoping to help customers “Spring” out of the winter doldrums! We want to reward our loyal local customers, acquaint locals and visitors alike with our new early departures, and really kick start our season.”

The round-trip vehicle discounts are available Tuesday through Thursday for both the “Spring Sail!” and Local Loyalty Fares, but space is limited and reservations are required. While the “Spring Sail!” fare is only available on the 6:30 a.m. departure from Cape May, NJ and 8:00 a.m. departure leaving Lewes, DE; the Local Loyalty Fare is available during all mid-week departures (Tuesday - Thursday). The Local Loyalty Fare is available to residents of Cape May and Sussex counties, and requires a photo ID with an address in these counties at check in.

Cape Island Seeks Designation as a Community Wildlife Habitat

Cape Island Seeks Designation as a Community Wildlife Habitat

CAPE MAY - New Jersey Audubon (NJA) and National Wildlife Federation (NWF) are seeking community support in their joint effort to certify Cape Island as a Community Wildlife Habitat. For the purposes of this effort, Cape Island is defined as the entire land mass south of the Cape May Canal, and it encompasses all habitats including preserved farmlands, parks, private for-profit businesses, condominium associations and individual backyards.

A community-wide habitat conservation project is already occurring on Cape Island thanks to the collective efforts of many organizations and agencies, individuals, and businesses. In order to help unify all the amazing things that are being done to preserve our island’s habitats, NJA proposes to register Cape Island in this program. As NWF’s state affiliate, NJA will engage its staff and volunteers in promoting this program and educating our neighbors about the benefits of managing habitats for wildlife. In addition, NJA will assemble the supporting documents needed to help move Cape Island toward certification.

If you are interested in certifying your yard, your business property, your school or church, go to the following web site: http://www.nwf.org/How-to-Help/Garden-for-Wildlife.aspx and look on the right for creating a habitat and then getting the certification.

The Cape Island Certification Project is being spearheaded locally by the Nature Center of Cape May. Email Evelyn Lovitz at nccm@njaudubon.org if you able to provide assistance or have questions. Remember, this is a community effort that benefits all of us.
