Wine and Dine This October in Victorian Cape May
CAPE MAY – The brisk sunny days and cool, crisp nights of Oct. are the perfect time to treat yourself to delicious Cape May food and wine events sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC). Sample Cape May's new microbrews, enjoy a fall afternoon in the vineyard or help solve a murder mystery over dinner or lunch. You won't want to miss the popular Chocolate Championship Tour & Tasting! New this year, is an afternoon tea with psychic twins Adele and Allison, a Victorian underwear fashion show and brunch, and a beer and chocolate tasting.
Back by popular demand, the Chocolate Championship Tour & Tasting on Sat., Oct. 6 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. will have you sampling some of the best chocolate desserts from Cape May's historic properties and B&B inns. Taste, tour and vote, as you visit every competitor to sample their signature chocolate dessert and vote for your favorites. Will it be the Five-layer Chocolate Treats or perhaps the Chocolate Mint Brownies? The OMG Trifles or maybe the Queen Victoria Chocolate Delights? You decide! Those who turn in completed evaluation cards will get recipes by email. Limited to 200 tickets. Admission is $25 and $15 for children (ages 3-12).
Your sweetest dreams will come true at the Fudge Fantasy with The Original Fudge Kitchen. On Sun., Oct. 7 at 2 p.m., The Original Fudge Kitchen will be displaying its hand-whipped creamy fudge in an array of flavors at the Inn of Cape May, 7 Ocean St. Sample the famous fudge flavors, learn how they make the fudge and much more. Admission is $15 per person.
Murder is on the menu during the Murder Mystery Dinners and Luncheons. The Impromptu Players invade the dining room at the Inn of Cape May, 7 Ocean St., where they set the scene for the new mystery for fall 2012, "Foul Weather Fiend," at Aleathea's Restaurant. Enjoy a four-course dinner or three-course luncheon as you contemplate the clues, interact with the cast and help solve the mystery. Dinners are offered on Oct. 6-8, 13, 20 and 27 at 7 p.m. and admission is $45. The Luncheon is offered on Oct. 14, 21 and 28 at 1 p.m. and is $30. These are limited events; reservations are necessary.
Celebrate Oktoberfest at the Mad Batter Beer Dinner "Local Microbrews" on Fri., Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m. The famous Mad Batter restaurant, 19 Jackson St., is serving a four course Oktoberfest dinner paired with local microbrews. Admission is $65 and seating is limited to 60.
New in 2012! Who said beer and chocolate don't go together? Not America's beer authority, Gary Monterosso, who hosts a sampling of beers and chocolates that go perfectly together during the Beer & Chocolate Tasting at the Inn of Cape May, 7 Ocean St. on Sat., Oct. 6 at 2 p.m. Admission is $30.
If you have a taste for history, take the Champagne Brunch Walk on Sun., Oct. 7 at 10 a.m. First, build up your appetite with a walking tour of Cape May's Historic District, and then enjoy a Southern-style breakfast buffet with mimosas at the historic Chalfonte Hotel, 301 Howard St. Admission is $20 for adults and $15 for children (ages 3-12). You can also opt for just the Historic District Walking tour (on a space available basis). Admission is $10 and $7 for children (ages 3-12).
To drink or not to drink, that is the question at the Tea Luncheon & Temperance Debate on Tues., Oct. 9 at 12:30 p.m. at the Carriage House Café & Tearoom located on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St. Saloonkeeper Patrick Collins and Jennie Wales, staunch advocate of the temperance movement, revive this topic for a spirited debate. Join Dr. Physick as he attempts to maintain civility. Admission is $25 and includes an elegant tea luncheon. The event is limited to 50 guests. Advance reservations are highly recommended.
New in 2012! What in the world were they wearing under those Victorian garments? You'll find out during a delicious brunch at the Carriage House Café & Tearoom on the grounds of the Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St., during the Show Us Your Undies Brunch & Fashion Show. Join Grand Oak Plantation on Mon., Oct. 8 at 10 a.m. for a fashion show and you'll discover what shaped the fashionable Victorian lady. You'll even see what the proper gentleman had to cope with to dress for the day. Admission is $25 and includes a fashion show and brunch.
New in 2012! Get into the spirit of Halloween in Cape May during Madame Parmentier's Psychic Teas. Enjoy a psychic demonstration with selected readings over tea at the Carriage House Café & Tearoom on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St., featuring the Psychic Twins, Adele and Allison, who work professionally as psychic mediums, educators, and motivational speakers and will make their first appearance here. The twins have been featured on local radio and TV shows, and often when they work together, "phenomena" occur. There is something unusual about their work! Saturdays, Oct. 13, 20 and 27, at 2:30 p.m. Admission is $40 per person and reservations are necessary.
Every Sat. during Oct. at 3 p.m., you can tour the award-winning Cape May Winery in North Cape May. The Winery Cellar Tour & Tasting features a tour of the vineyard to see how the grapes are grown and a visit to the winery, where you'll be introduced to the winemaker's art and enjoy a barrel tasting accompanied by cheese and fruit. Admission is $20 and includes a complimentary tasting glass.
Spend the afternoon touring the wineries of Cape May County at your own pace during the Self-Guided Wine Trail. Visit Natali Vineyards and Hawk Haven Vineyard & Winery and taste wines at each. Admission is $8 and includes a map with the wineries listed, tastings at both wineries and a complimentary tasting glass. The Self-Guided Wine Trail is offered daily from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
New in 2012! What's brewing in Cape May? Some great spirits, as you'll find out on the Self-guided Wine & Brewery Tour. This tour includes two area wineries, Natali Vineyards and Hawk Haven Vineyard and Winery, along with the new Cape May Brewing Company. Take a tour at each stop and sample some of their products. Admission is $13 and includes a map with directions. Offered Saturdays, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
How does your seafood get from the sea to your table? You can learn during the Fisherman's Wharf Tour, a guided tour of Fisherman's Wharf at the Lobster House Restaurant. Discover how Cape May has become the third largest commercial fishing port on the East Coast. Offered on Sat., Oct. 6 at 10:30 a.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $7 for children (ages 3-12).
Hop on board a MAC trolley at the Physick Estate and stop at the Inn of Cape May, 7 Ocean St., for lunch and antiquing during Lunch & Antiquing By Trolley. Then, it's back on board for a full afternoon of crafts and antiques shopping with stops at West End Garage, TreeHouse Antiques and Cape May Antique Center. Offered on Sun., Oct. 7 from 11:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. $35 includes lunch and transportation.
The Carriage House Café & Tearoom located on the beautiful grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St., has a new menu for 2012 that features signature salads, wraps, paninis and tea sandwiches, homemade soups and quiche, plus the popular Classic Tea Luncheon and a children's menu.
