Local Moms Raise Funds for Sandy Hook Victims
CAPE MAY - Cape May County moms have organized an online auction and benefit to raise funds for short- and long-term therapy services for victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Newtown, Conn.
Healing Hands for Sandy Hook is a community effort organized by three local moms, Laura Goodavage, Christina Walls, and Jessica Groetsch, who want to raise funds to help the victims' families, survivors, first responders, and friends and family of the community who have been directly affected by the shooting which took the lives of 20 children and six faculty members on Dec. 14.
"As the media coverage fades and the rest of the world moves on, the very real pain for those in the Sandy Hook community remains. The need for short-term and long-term therapy is imperative to help deal with the repercussions of experiencing such a traumatic event," said Goodavage.
Healing Hands for Sandy Hook is holding an online auction, which opened Feb. 1 and runs through Feb. 22, followed by a benefit on Feb. 23 at Cabana's Beach Bar and Grill, 429 Beach Ave., Cape May, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tickets to the benefit are $26, in honor of the 20 children and six faculty members who died. Entertainment will include local musicians Johnny Miller, Kate Delany, and Carl Behrens.
All proceeds will benefit the Newtown Parent Connection, a grassroots foundation begun in 2006 by two mothers in Newtown, Conn. The foundation has served many needs in the community and has been a beacon for assistance in times of disaster including the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary.
You can help by making a cash donation, donating items for the auction, bidding for items in the online auction from Feb. 1 through Feb. 22, and by purchasing tickets for the benefit fundraiser on Feb. 23. Sponsorships are also available.
