Award-winning musician and folklorist Mick Moloney brings Ireland to Cape May Convention Hall on St. Patrick’s Day, Sunday, March 17
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 13, 2013
Mick Moloney to Perform in Cape May
CAPE MAY, NJ – Award-winning musician and folklorist Mick Moloney brings Ireland to Cape May
Convention Hall on St. Patrick’s Day, Sunday, March 17 at 4 pm. Mick has recorded and produced over
forty albums of traditional music, and his 2006 release McNally’s Row of Flats was named the number-one traditional Irish album by noted music commentator Earle Hitchner. Says Hitchner: "No one has
succeeded more in taking this once-vital part of Irish American culture out of musty archives and
moldering dissertations and placing it afresh on CD and concert stage than Mick Moloney."
Born in Ireland, Mick came to America in 1973 and has pursued a career that uniquely combines the
roles of musician, folklorist, author, presenter, radio and television personality, and educator. Mick is
the author of Far From the Shamrock Shore: The story of Irish American History Through Song, with
an accompanying music CD that uses song to narrate the journey of Irish immigration to America. He
has hosted three nationally syndicated series of folk music on American Public Television, and was
awarded the 1999 National Heritage Award from the National Endowment for the Arts — the highest
official honor a traditional artist can receive in the United States.
The Ugly Mug, one of the area’s favorite spots for over 85 years,
will be selling some of it’s famous pub grub and beverage starting at 3 p.m. Patrons are encouraged to get Convention Hall early to kick off the Irish festivities with a pint of Guinness or Smithwicks!

Christie's no-bid Hurricane Sandy contract could cost N.J. millions in federal funding

Cape May Whale Watcher Group Likely to Own Lighthouse
By Jack Fichter
PrevNextEnlarge1 of 2
SCHELLENGER’S LANDING- It looks likely the National Park Service will award ownership of the Brandywine Shoal Light Station, located seven miles off our coast, to a non-profit organization headed by Capt. Jeff Stewart Sr. and Jr., owners of the Cape May Whale Watcher boats and the Miss Chris Marina.
Their organization, Brandywine Shoal Lighthouse Inc., was selected by the National Park Service based on its application to own the lighthouse.
Cape May Whale Watcher has been running Lighthouse Adventure boat trips in conjunction with Mid Atlantic Center for the Arts since 1993.
The other contender for ownership of the lighthouse was the Cape May Maritime Museum and Education Center headed by Kevin Maloney.
Capt. Jeff Stewart Jr. said the paperwork to apply for ownership was daunting with an initial application of 350 pages.
Stephanie Toothman, associate director of cultural resources of the Department of the Interior, told Stewart and Maloney in written correspondence their applications were carefully evaluated by looking at their proposed maintenance, preservation, use, financial and management plans for the lighthouse.
“Based upon our review and evaluation, the National Park Service will recommend the Secretary of the Interior select Brandywine Shoal Lighthouse Inc. as the recipient of the Brandywine Shoal Light Station in accordance with the NHLPA (National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act),” she said.
The selection recommendation is subject to administrative review. Cape May Maritime Museum had 15 days beginning Feb. 11 to petition a review of the recommendation.
Maloney told the Herald Feb. 20 he was awaiting the advice of counsel about the possibility of asking for an administrative review “to make sure the process was followed.” He said he was facing a deadline of Feb. 25.
According to Toothman, if Cape May Maritime Museum does not request a review, the Secretary of the Interior will forward the recommendation to the Administrator of the General Services Administration.
The letters encouraged cooperation between the two organizations for the preservation and public use of Brandywine Shoal Light Station.
Capt. Jeff Stewart Jr. said the lighthouse needed a lot of restoration work before the organization will offer tours inside the building. He said a number of items needed to be addressed to make the lighthouse safe for work crews.
Stewart said there was the possibility of lead paint in the lighthouse. Railings need to be installed.
“There is the subject of being able to just get up into the lighthouse,” he said. “There is a ladder but it’s a very poor ladder.”
The lighthouse has no electricity. Its light and horn are solar powered. Stewart said the organization’s plans call for installation of a generator in the lighthouse’s generator room.
The group has a plan that would bring visitors to the lighthouse in about five years. He said to restore the lighthouse to perfect condition could take 10 years.
Stewart said passengers on Cape May Whale Watcher Lighthouse Adventure trips have asked for years about going inside the lighthouse.
It will take time but also a lot of money, he said. Stewart said Yank Marine of Tuckahoe would be a partner in the project.
Stewart said Brandywine Shoal Light Station may be the most important lighthouse in Delaware Bay since it is the first main light a ship encounters at the mouth of Delaware Bay where shipping traffic lines up for Paulsboro, Marcus Hook and Philadelphia.
The whale watcher boats will not fit inside a harbor around the lighthouse but the organization has smaller boats that can dock at the light station, said Stewart.
Lower Township Council voted unanimously Aug. 6, 2012 to accept the title to Brandywine Shoal Light Station if it was awarded to Cape May Maritime Museum. Maloney’s plan was to then lease the lighthouse from the township.

The focus of this exhibit is the black organizations of Cape May County. Admission is free. Exhibit is open Saturdays and daily March 22 through April 14 (closed Easter Sunday March 31). Hours vary. Scarborough Properties completed the purchase of Cape May Marina and Osprey Landing in Cape May, New Jersey.
Maritime communities are a specialty of our development business inclusive of operating marinas and full service boat yards for the last 25 years. It is with this background in mind that we purchased the Cape May property with an eye to improve and complete the residential development and to enhance the existing marina. Boat service inclusive of a winter storage program remains a part of our plans moving forward along with our fuel dock, travel lift and service from the outstanding team you have come to know.
Some of our new marina customers may know us from our Harbour Cove Marina property in Somers Point, New Jersey. This 400 slip, two basin marina was developed by R Randle Scarborough and captures the waterside living lifestyle of the Jersey Shore. It is with this lifestyle in mind that we have now set a course to blend marine commerce and a livable community together on the same property.
Over the coming weeks we intend to provide updates on our progress through our new web site CapeMayMarina.com and I encourage our customers to contact either Mary Bodge – Marina Manager or Doug Scarborough - General Manager for additional information concerning slips and summer launch.

Center for Community Arts received an award of $10,000 from the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation
While Cape May received very little damage due to Hurricane Sandy, the Center for Community Arts was forced to cancel its Harvest Fling fundraising event and fundraisers associated with the Exit 0 International Jazz Festival incurring losses from these cancellations.
The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Robert Rauschenberg Foundation and Lambent Foundation (a project of the Tides Center) announced a two-pronged major relief effort to assist artists and non-profit arts organizations who suffered serious damage in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
Every effort helps in a state of emergency - we are struck by the scope of need," said Christy MacLear, Executive Director of the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. "Pooling our resources with other artist foundations will help simplify the points of access for both artists and organizations - hopefully making the process of request as simple as possible for those hardest hit."
Robert Rauschenberg formed the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation in 1990 to promote awareness of the causes and groups close to his heart. Activities of the Foundation have included grant making, educational programs, prints and campaigns to benefit environmental and humanitarian initiatives. Today, the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation extends this scope with varied programs, including a new grant for artistic innovation and collaboration, and direct assistance for the advancement of art. The Foundation's Vision, Mission and Strategy are coordinated to promote the artist's values and to ensure that all endeavours express the essence of Robert Rauschenberg's philosophy: "Art Can Change the World."
The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation seeks to further the artist's philanthropic and educational initiatives, and aims to preserve and advance global understanding of the legacy of Robert Rauschenberg's life and artwork.
The Center for Community Arts is a multi-faceted arts education and humanities organization that includes the Youth Arts Program (YAP-Saturday Night) for youth ages 10-14, Art at the Library in 5 Cape May county locations for youth ages 5-9 and Summer Art Camp for ages 3 1/5 to 14. WCFA-LP 101.5FM, adult arts programs, Community History Committee and the rehabilitation of the Franklin Street School are additional CCA programs vital to the Cape May County community.
