Cape May Summer NJ Shore Rentals, The Early Bird Always Gets the Worm in Cape May.

It's time to start thinking about making that commitment for your NJ Shore rental in Cape May now. We usually wait until Easter to lock down our own plans, and tend to procrastinate about which property and do we rent in the same location again.

Well with the recent positive shore rental activity starting early this year, it's time for us to get off our butts head down the shore and make that commitment for the summer season. With the negative after effects of Hurricane Sandy and the shortage of Shore Rental properties in Cape May, my assumption is that we will be competing for rental space from our less fortunate NJ neighbors in Long Beach Island and Central New Jersey. CAPE MAY, N.J. – Coast Guard officials are preparing to evacuate its only enlisted basic training center in preparation for Tropical Storm Sandy Sunday at 2 p.m.

CAPE MAY, N.J. – Coast Guard officials are preparing to evacuate its only enlisted basic training center in preparation for Tropical Storm Sandy Sunday at 2 p.m.

Staff at Training Center Cape May will evacuate more than 270 recruits to a designated safe haven at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst where the recruits will continue with their training schedule. Training Center Cape May will also be closed to all non-essential personnel beginning Sunday at 6 p.m.

“Our primary concerns are to ensure the safety of our recruits, Coast Guardsmen and their families and to minimize the impact this storm will have on the training process,” said Capt. Bill Kelly, the commanding officer of Training Center Cape May.

More than 1,000 Coast Guardsmen and their families will also be complying with a county evacuation order in preparation for Sandy. Local Coast Guard leaders met with Coast Guardsmen and their families during a town hall meeting Saturday at 10 a.m.

The 14 tenant commands located aboard Training Center Cape May will also be evacuating. Those operational units like Station Cape May or Aids to Navigation Team Cape May will be prepositioning outside the storm’s path for post-storm rescue and recovery operations.

Officials have postponed the reporting dates for more than 50 applicants scheduled to report for basic training Tuesday evening. Those applicants have been instructed to contact their recruiter for a new reporting date in the coming weeks.

Coast Guardsmen, their families, and friends and families of recruits can find updates and information by clicking here or visiting http://www.uscgnews.com/go/doctype/4007/117335. People can also get up-to-date information about the status of the training center, recruits and evacuation at www.facebook.com/uscoastguardbootcamp. Hurricane Information and Actions
A Hurricane Watch is issued for a coastal area when there is a threat of hurricane conditions within 24-36 hours. It means you must take action to obtain supplies, secure your home, and prepare to evacuate.

A Hurricane Warning is issued when hurricane conditions of strong winds, high water and storm surge are expected in a specified coastal area in 24 hours or less. It means you must take action for your safety.

Pre-Evacuation Actions
· Fill your car with gas, check car battery and oil, flashlight and radio batteries.
· Put your survival kit together and refill prescription drugs and obtain special medications (e.g. insulin).
· Secure outdoor lawn furniture and loose materials, shutter windows, etc.
· Prepare your family for evacuation. Because it depends on the strength, location and direction of the hurricane’s movement, you may have to evacuate even before a hurricane warning is issued.
· Make arrangements for your pets. They will not be allowed in public shelters.
· Top off underground tanks to prevent flotation.
· Put together materials needed to take to a shelter such as prescription medications, special dietary food, specific medical information, personal aids, eyeglasses, hearing aids, etc.
· Remember, late evacuations will take longer to clear the threatened areas – evacuate early and promptly.
· Stay tuned for emergency information on local radio, TV and cable stations.

Major Evacuation Routes
The major evacuation routes for Cape May County are: The Garden State Parkway, U.S. 9, Routes 47, 49, 50 and 83. Remember – alcoholic beverages, pets and weapons are prohibited within Emergency Public Shelters.

In New Jersey, a state of emergency has been declared with barrier islands — from Sandy Hook south to Cape May — ordered to be evacuated by 4pm Sunday, Oct. 28.

As Hurricane Sandy, downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm with hurricane winds for a brief period, hits the southeastern coast of the U.S, the entire East Coast region is preparing for what could potentially be a devastating weather event.

The storm, which has killed several dozen people in the Caribbean, is expected to be a "storm of historic proportions" for the Mid-Atlantic region, including the New Jersey shore, New York City, Delaware, Pennsylvania and possibly Ohio.

In New Jersey, a state of emergency has been declared with barrier islands — from Sandy Hook south to Cape May — ordered to be evacuated by 4pm Sunday, Oct. 28.

The casinos in Atlantic City have also been ordered by Gov. Chris Christie to be evacuated by 4pm Sunday.

Christie declared the state of emergency Saturday morning warning that the storm could severely affect the Garden State, with conditions related to Sandy expected to be felt late Sunday and then be in "full force by Monday,"

"It's likely that Hurricane Sandy will make landfall late on Monday evening, bringing with it accumulated rain, high winds and shore erosion," Christie stated in a press conference.

"We should not underestimate the impact of this storm," he added.

Christie encouraged state residents to be prepared and not cynical about what the media has dubbed the "Frankenstorm," a hurricane that is expected to make last year's Irene tropical storm look like a drizzle.

By 7pm, (EST) Saturday evening, local reports indicated that Sandy would strike the Atlantic City region between 4am Monday morning and later that day, with its weather effects lasting through Tuesday. Power outtages, flooding, fallen trees and other storm-related damages are already being prepared for throughout the region.

A story on the NBC News site on Saturday afternoon included the tag line:

"People in the high impact zone from Virginia to Southern New England have one day left to make preparations," with NBC meteorologist Bill Karins calling for "serious and life-threatening weather conditions," as Hurricane Sandy headed north.

According to the article, "The National Hurricane Center briefly downgraded Sandy to a tropical storm early Saturday, but said hurricane-strength winds had been detected just a few hours later."

Karins predicts "considerable damage" due to storm surges, fresh-water flooding and strong winds Monday afternoon and evening.

"Serious and life-threatening weather conditions are expected from Outer Banks to New England," Karins said.

Sandy could effect the upcoming Presidential Election Nov. 6, with power outages and clean-up efforts due to Sandy expected to take from days to weeks in some areas.

Transportation in the U.S. Northeast will also be effected by Sandy with flights canceled, delayed and other modes of transportation shut down during the storm.

According to the report, Sandy has left the following deaths and damage in the Caribbean prior to moving north:

Weather Update

Active Weather Threat,,Halloween Week Nor’easter,October 28,th,– 31,st,2012

October 25, 2012

Cape May Court House - The Cape May County Office of Emergency Management continues to monitor the path of Hurricane Sandy.  The potential of the storm reaching our region has increased over the past 24 hours.  The storm has retained tropical characteristics i.e.. extremely heavy rainfall rates, a core of very strong winds.

The potential continues for a very dangerous autumn storm system to impact the region early next week.  This storm will be associated with what is currently Hurricane Sandy and will bring strong damaging wind gusts, extremely heavy rainfall and major flooding along streams and rivers.  A full moon occurs on October 29th, which will contribute to major coastal flooding.

The eventual track of this storm will determine the area that is impacted; however, the likelihood of the storm affecting our region has once again increased over the past 24 hours.

Preparedness steps to take now:

  • Review your Family Emergency Plan and update as needed
  • Be prepared to evacuate if local officials instruct you to do so
  • Be prepared for potential long-term power outages
  • There are a lot of leaves on the ground, which are excellent material to clog/block storm drains, worsening local/neighborhood flooding.  Get leaves and any other obstructing materials away from storm drains before this storm arrives.
  • Secure outdoor furniture and items

Here is a copy of the advisory issued Wednesday, October 25, 2012 by the National Weather Service.

When A Storm Threatens:

Teach family members how and when to turn off gas, electricity, and water.
Keep a supply of cooking and eating implements that can be used in the absence of running water and electricity, such as:
Plastic utensils, paper cups & plates.
Manual can and bottle openers.
A heating source, such as a camp stove or canned heat stove, and extra fuel.
Plenty of plastic garbage bags.
Flashlights, battery operated radio, and plenty of batteries.
Monitor TV, radio, & newspapers for emergency information.
Multimedia announcements will be your only way to learn about boil water requirements during & after a disaster.

During a Hurricane Watch & Warning:

Thoroughly clean the bathtub, jugs, bottles and cooking utensils.
Fill your bathtub and any other large containers with water for washing, cleaning and flushing the toilet.
Have one gallon of water per person, per day available to meet your drinking & cooking needs for a two week period.
Nonperishable food.
Do not lower the water level in your swimming pool, or it may pop out of the ground.
Refill special medications.
Fill your car with gas.
Put up shutters, siding or plywood on windows.
Put important documents in a safe dry place.
Locate insurance information.
Charge rechargeable items.
Secure boats.
Move cars into garage or near building, away from trees.
Clear patio and yard of loose objects.
If you have cable, get out your set-top antenna.
Move valuables off of the floor.
Cover or move furniture away from windows.
During Storm:
Close all interior doors.
Don't open any windows.
If necessary, cover yourself with a mattress.
Closely monitor radio & TV.
Stay off phone.
Do not light candles or kerosene lanterns.
If the wind dies down, you may only be in the eye of the storm, do not go outside, wait for the all-clear.
