Memorial Day Events

All events take place Monday, May 27

 

Avalon Memorial Day Parade 9 a.m. at 32nd Street and Dune Drive. Parade route goes to Veterans Plaza, 21st Street and Dune Drive.

Cape May County Veterans Bureau Memorial Day Service 2 p.m. at the Cape May County Veterans Cemetery, 129 Crest Haven Road, Cape May Court House.

Speakers include Freeholder Director Gerald Thornton, Freeholder Kristine Gabor and Capt. William G. Kelly of the U.S. Coast Guard training center in Cape May. Congressman Frank LoBiondo has been invited to speak. The Coast Guard will provide the ceremonial detail, and representatives from Cape May County Veterans organizations will participate in the program. City of Cape May Memorial Day Ceremony 10:30 a.m. at the Cape May Convention Hall, 714 Boardwalk. See www.capemayrecreation.org or call 609-884-9565 for more information.

Stone Harbor Memorial Day Parade 11 a.m. service at the firehouse, 96th Street and Second Avenue. At noon the parade will go down 96th Street to the beach. At 1 p.m. the American Legion will host an open house with free food and drink. See www.stoneharborbeach.com .

Middle Township Memorial Day Parade 10 a.m. from Memorial Field on Pacific Avenue to Boyd Street, Cape May Court House, then north on Boyd Street turning left onto Mechanic Street and left onto Dias Creek Road ending at the American Legion Hall. There will be a bike decorating contest for age categories 3-6, 7-9 and 10-12. Judging will be at lineup at 9:15 a.m. Free hot dogs and soda at American Legion Hall after parade.

Wildwood Memorial Day Service 11 a.m. at Wildwood American Legion Post 184, 4200 Atlantic Ave. Retired Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Pierson will be the guest speaker at a ceremony at the American Legion Post on Roberts and Atlantic avenues that will include local officials, law enforcement, and military organizations, according to the hosting organizations. In the event of rain the service will be held inside. After the ceremony, there will be three short services at Memory Lane, the Vietnam Wall, and on the beach. There will be a candlelight vigil at the Wildwood Vietnam Memorial Wall 8 p.m. on Burk and Ocean avenues. Motorcyclists who wish to ride in a procession can meet at the parking lot behind Rio Station to the right of the Rio Grande Wawa, where they will depart at 7:15 p.m. for the ride to Wildwood.

North Wildwood Memorial Day Service honoring soliders from every war 10 a.m. at the North Wildwood Veterans Monument, Spruce and New York avenues hosted by North Wildwood Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5941 and the city. There will also be a service at 9:30 a.m. at the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse flagpole where the names of VFW Post 5941 members who have passed since last Memorial Day will be read and their service commemorated.

Sea Isle City Memorial Day Ceremony 10 a.m. at Veterans Park, JFK Boulevard and Landis Avenue. Ceremonial wreaths will be placed at the base of the park’s memorial fountain, and several members of the Cape May County Militia will perform a gun salute. After the ceremony all are welcome to follow the Boy Scout Troop 76 color guard to the JFK Boulevard beach, where the Sea Isle City Beach Patrol will row a lifeguard boat beyond the breakers and set flowers adrift in honor of America’s deceased naval heroes. Upper Township Memorial Day Services 9:30 a.m. at Staff Sgt. William Godfrey Memorial Park, 1731 Route 9. Osprey Point in Seaville will host its annual Memorial Day. Residents Aldo Palombo will serve as host and Thomas Shaiko will speak about his experience in the Marine Corps. Members of VFW Post 8695 under the command of Charles Addelizi, and the American Legion Post 239 rifle squad under the command of Hermon Scheibein will attend. Boy Scout Troop 55 will serve as the Color Guard with their bugler playing taps. If there is inclement weather, the program will be held in the Osprey Point Clubhouse, where light refreshments will be served.

Members of VFW Post 8695 of Marmora and American Legion Post 239 of Tuckahoe will visit four monuments and eight area cemeteries in observance of Memorial Day. Members of Troop 55 of Tuckahoe will serve as the color guard. There will be rifle salute, chaplain’s prayer and playing of taps at each stop. Light refreshments will be served at noon at the Upper Township Community Center on Route 50 in Tuckahoe. All are welcome to join in at any or all stops and gather for refreshments afterward.
