Kayakers to Help Clean Up Cape May Harbor
Osprey Nest in Cape May Harbor |
According to founder, David Rohm, “We love Cape May so much that we had to bring the event down to Cape May as well.” The Paddle Without Pollution organization will be bolstered by staff and volunteers from New Jersey Audubon’s Nature Center of Cape May, partner Aqua Trails Kayak Tours as well as kayak enthusiasts from far and wide.“Kayaks allow us to get into places that are difficult or impossible for motorized boats to reach. Participants are often able to grab litter and pollution that has been there for years. Much of this pollution does not biograde quickly and can be harmful to wildlife and sealife,” according to Rohm.
Volunteers will launch from the ramp located at 1600 Delaware Avenue and help pick up trash from approximately three miles in either direction. A limited number of kayaks will be available to borrow on a first-come, first-serve basis. Rentals will also be available at a discounted rate and volunteers are welcome to utilize their own kayaks and canoes. Bags and gloves will be provided. Dinner will be provided free-of-charge for volunteers at Harpoon Henry’s afterwards.
Call the Nature Center, 609-898-8848 or register in person at the Center. There is no cost if you use your own kayak. Discounted kayak rental rates available through Aqua Trails Kayak Tours, 609-884-5600.
The Paddle Without Pollution effort in Cape May falls during Clean Ocean Action’s Cape May to Montauk Tour For the Shore Rally, Aug. 10 – 24. The Rally featuring Margo Pellegrino seeks to educate the public about the Clean Ocean Zone which is an initiative to prohibit ocean dumping and offshore ocean industrialization. The long term goal is to create the nation’s first Wild and Industry Free Clean Ocean Zone extending from Cape May to Montauk, NY.
