Peach Festival
The Women's Club of Cape May will hold its 37th annual Peach Festival in the auditorium of Our Lady Star of The Sea Church, Washington and Ocean Streets, on Friday, Aug. 10 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proceeds benefit various local charities and scholarships. Items for sale, collectables, books, plants, toys, and jewelry. Food items include hot dogs with sauerkraut or chili, water, coffee and tea, as well as cobblers, peaches, ice cream and home baked goods featuring peach desserts.
Beer and Crab Fest
Don't miss great family fun with steamed crabs, corn on the cob, pulled pork, local and regional craft beers and all-day entertainment during a traditional summer feast at the Craft Beer and Crab Festival on Saturday, Aug. 11 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) with major funding by PNC Bank and Gold Coast Production Management. Come to the beautiful grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St. and stretch out on the lawn or relax under the tent during this all-day festival. Admission to the grounds is free and free parking is available. There will be a charge for crabs, food, beverages and some activities.
Coast Guard boating safety classes
A one-day boating safety course will be offered on Saturday, Aug. 11 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Price Hall located at Academy and Seashore Roads in Cold Spring. Students will receive an official New Jersey Safe Boating Certificate, which is required by law for any person 16 years of age or older who intends to operate a vessel 12 feet and over, or personal watercraft. Course fee is $45. Instructors are qualified personnel of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 86 of Lower Township. Traditional Jazz
On Sunday, Aug. 12, “Ragtime Review” with Valerie Jean on vocals and her swinging group of great jazzmen will play 2 to 4 p.m. On Thursday, Sept 13, the Ed Wise Full New Orleans Jazz Band will play from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. On Thursday, Oct. 11, the Al Harrison Dixieland Band will play from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. On Thursday, Nov. 15, the Atlantic City Jazz Band will play from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door. Advent organ recital
Cape May’s Episcopal Church of the Advent invites everyone to its next organ recital on Aug. 12 at 4 p.m. The guest organist will be Russell Meyer, organist and choirmaster of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Bridgeton from 1994 to 2006. Russell has appeared as organ recitalist at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York, the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, NJ, St. Joseph’s Church on Capital Hill in Washington, DC, the Longwood Gardens Conservatory, the Cathedral of Christ the King in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and the 1982 Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, South Carolina.
Sunset ferry cruises
Board the Cape May Lewes-Ferry's MV Delaware and join the Friends of the Cape May Lighthouse in the Crow's Nest Lounge for Sunset Ferry Cruises, special programs highlighting maritime history and the lore of the lighthouse on board a round-trip ferry ride beginning and ending at the North Cape May ferry terminus. Sunset Ferry Cruises set sail on Sunday, Aug. 12 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 9 at 6 p.m. Advanced registration is required and includes walk-on round-trip ferry passage and the Friends presentations. Registration is $18 for members of the Friends of the Lighthouse and $28 for non-members. Registration for members opens immediately. Art in the Park
West Cape May will hold its annual Art in the Park series this summer on Saturday, Aug. 18 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Wilbraham Park. Rain date is the next day. Art in the Park is a local art show featuring artists in several mediums from South Jersey and beyond. Meet the artists and see their works in oil, pottery, acrylics, glass, jewelry and photography. Several artists will be working on site to demonstrate their talents. Cape May Crab Cake Company will be selling crab cakes and soda. Teddy Bear tea parties
Teddy bears, lovable and loyal companions since the early 20th century, are invited this summer to a tea luncheon along with children and adults at Teddy Bear Tea Parties, held at Cape May's Carriage House Café & Tearoom located on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St. Bring your own bear (or dolly) to the café and enjoy kid-friendly menus and teddy bear music. Miss Jeanne and Mocha the Bear present stories and activities for the Teddy Bear Tea Party attendees, providing each with a goody bag to take home. South Jersey Wind Ensemble plays
Celebrate the summer season with an old-fashioned band concert by the South Jersey Area Wind Ensemble on Wednesday, Aug. 22 at 7:30 p.m. in Cape May Convention Hall, 714 Beach Avenue. The program, “Under the Big Top,” will thrill the audience with a show aimed at all ages. Highlights include “Tuba Tiger Rag,” “Barnum and Bailey’s Favorite,” selections from “The Wizard of Oz” and “Beauty and the Beast.” In addition to the band of 65 highly accomplished musicians, the audience might see a clown, singers, dancers, and much more. The band, under the direction of Keith W. Hodgson and associate director Ron Poorman, has been named one of the top 50 community bands in the country, and will definitely keep your feet tapping. Full moon events
Let the light of the full moon guide you to the top of the Cape May Lighthouse or lead you on a ghost hunt through Cape May's original haunted house, the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St., on tours sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC). Two tours, the Lighthouse Full Moon Climb and the Full Moon Ghost Hunt with Ghost-One, take full advantage of bright, moonlit nights. Tickets are $30 per person and each tour is limited to 50 people. Upcoming Full Moon Ghost Hunts with Ghost-One are offered on Thursday, Aug. 2, Friday, Aug. 31 and Saturday, Sept. 29 at 7:30 p.m. Upcoming Lighthouse Full Moon Climbs are offered on Thursday, Aug. 2, Friday, Aug. 31 and Saturday, Sept. 29, from 8 to 10 p.m. The lighthouse is located in Cape May Point State Park, Lower Township. Tower admission is free for Friends members. Admission for non-members is $7 for adults and $3 for children (ages 3-12). Non-members who join the group at the event will get free admission to the lighthouse climb and to future Friends' events. Admission to the Visitors' Orientation Center and the ground floor of the lighthouse is free.
Musical programs and community picnics
Free musical programs and community picnics will be held at Fishing Creek School on the third Fridays of June, July and August from 5 to 7 p.m. $1 hot dogs, $1 pizza slices, $1 drinks. Rich Chiemingo, a local resident and musician, will present each of the musical programs with an engaging commentary. During each of these events, Gaiss’ Meat Market and Villas Domino’s Pizza will sell picnic fare. The events are sponsored by the Friends of Fishing Creek School.
Stan Sperlak featured at Noyes Museum of Art
The Noyes Museum of Art of Stockton College will present Stan Sperlak: Into the Night, a solo exhibition of the artist’s new pastel work, through Sept. 23. This is the artist’s 25th solo exhibition, a major milestone for the Cape May resident. An exclusive preview reception for collectors with the artist in attendance is scheduled for Thursday, May 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. For more information call 652-8848 or visit www.noyesmuseum.org.
Art on display
Rosalie Hettenbach is the featured artist in the newly renovated A Ca Mia restaurant, 524 Washington Street Mall in Cape May. Her exhibit of 29 oil paintings is on display April 6 through December. Vendors wanted for Fall Fest in the Park
Fall Fest in the Park, sponsored by the United Methodist Women of the Cape May United Methodist Church, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 6 (rain or shine) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Rotary Park located on Lafayette Street between Decatur and Jackson Streets in Cape May. Vesper services
The churches of Cape May will once again offer Vesper services on Sunday evenings during July and August at 6 p.m. at Cape May Convention Hall. This reinstates the ecumenical service which was offered on Sunday evenings at the old Convention Hall. Each week a different congregation is responsible for the worship service, and each will lead a service according to its own tradition. Upcoming Vesper services are on the following Sundays at 6 p.m.: Assembly of God on July 29; Church of Advent on Aug. 5; Cape Island Baptist on Aug. 12; Our Lady Star of the Sea on Aug. 19; First Presbyterian on Aug. 26.
Fellowship and worship service
All are invited to meet each Saturday at The Branches at 4:30 p.m. when worshippers will gather for a light meal followed at 5 p.m. by a worship service. A variety of worship styles, including contemporary and traditional Episcopal Eucharistic services, Celtic services, Taize services, will be celebrated. The Saturday Fellowship and Worship Service is yet one more ministry offered at The Branches. Other ministries include Coffee and Conversation from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays and Saturdays, a free lunch following Midday Prayer at noon on Wednesdays, Movie Night at 7 p.m. on the third Sunday of each month, South Jersey Legal Aid on the first and third Thursdays of each month at 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. respectively. The Branches is the Mission and Outreach Center of the Episcopal Churches of St. Barnabas (Villas) and St. Mary's (Stone Harbor).
