Santa's Magic Lights Physick Estate Christmas Tree

Santa's Magic Lights Physick Estate Christmas Tree

Holiday | Sat, 11/17/2012
By Al Campbell

'Tis the season now that the Christmas tree was lit by Santa on Nov. 17 at Emlen Physick Estate, Cape May. Photo by Al Campbell

CAPE MAY – “Four, three, two, one…” then Santa pushed the magic button and the huge evergreen on the Emlen Physick Estate came to light, with a star on top.

A large crowd gathered Nov. 17 at the Washington Street landmark for the annual ceremony that never grows old, and attracts more young spectators every time.

The embodiment of the good doctor walked about greeting visitors and helping escort the North Pole’s number one citizen into the gazebo where, after the lighting ceremony, the jolly gent listened to the wishes of the young, and posed with them for photos.

Free tours of the Physick Estate drew several hundred to the Victorian dwelling.

In the Carriage House was a display of model railroad trains, which drew hundreds of other visitors. Donations of non-perishable food were accepted by the house to aid the local food bank.

The event was Cape May County’s first tree lighting of the 2012

Cape May Resort Blog: A Cape May Thanksgiving, help neighbors with a sma...: This year many of us living in New Jersey  Shore and  the Cape May local areas have many things to be thankful for. Help others with a small house hold gift to the local NJ Skipping Christmas program.

A Cape May Thanksgiving, help neighbors with a small household gift to the "Skipping Christmas" local program

This year many of us living in New Jersey  Shore and  the Cape May local areas have many things to be thankful for.
Spend you Thanksgiving week end in Cape May NJ

Thanksgiving dinner in Cape May NJ

Hurricane Sandy displaced many New Jersey home owners and destroyed properties, boats and disrupted our neighbors lives. We are most thankful for all of the emergency workers including Police, Fire, Coast Guard, The Red Cross and the Utility workers that struggled to assist and bring normalcy back to our lives.

Enjoy Thanksgiving in Cape May at the Congress Hall or your Favorite Bed and Breakfast

Help Other New Jersey Local Residents with  the Skipping Christmas Program

This year, instead of over spending on over the top gifts and expensive dinners, we plan to make a donation to our favorite charity and local animal rescue service. We have a local program call "Skipping Christmas" which assists the needy residents of Brick Township.

This Thanksgiving you can " Skip Christmas" for others and help the residents of Brick Township. Please consider purchasing an item or two for those in need of household and personal belongings. This Program will help the residents of Brick Township NJ, and the shipments will go to the Brick Township Police department for disbursement.

This simple program allows you to use your Amazon account make a small gift purchase for "Those in Need" and the shipment goes towards selected Brick Township Residents. Please make a small donation and help those in Brick Township with this Skipping Christmas program. You can click here and view the list of needed household items requested.

This year, we plan to keep it simple and be thankful for the small things in life, spend times with our loved ones and take a brisk walk on the Cape May beaches to help renew and revitalize our spirit.

A Warm Fireplace seat at the Virgina Hotel during Winter, Cape May NJ.

As the winter season approaches, we enjoy taking a quiet walk on the empty beach, listening to the gulls and getting our faces ice cold. The best part of a Cape May winter day is to  head back to your favorite Bed and Breakfast or Hotel and sit back and enjoy a hot tea or coffee in front of a fireplace while relaxing.

If you want to take a break from the cooking and prepping for a Thanksgiving Dinner, you can visit many restaurants in Cape May that will do the work for you while you enjoy the time with your family.

You can play a role in the recovery and have an unforgettable night out at the fundraiser on Nov. 17, at 8 p.m. The concert will take place at Cape May Convention Hall, 714 Beach Avenue.
Three musical groups with strong links to the area will perform an exciting set list that brings together big band, rock, pop, and dance music. The Fred Hall Orchestra’s sophisticated style lures even the most reluctant dancers to the floor. For a lively change of pace, local favorite Twelve:01 kicks the night up a notch with its original power rock/pop music with an acoustic edge. And Red Mare, a collaboration of seasoned musicians with many Cape May ties, brings a fresh take to old favorites and new picks from the songbooks of some of your favorite artists.
The spacious dance floor will be open, with elegant cabaret seating and a cash bar with beer and wine hosted by Carney’s of Cape May. Sound is provided compliments of ACIR Professional, a complete audio system solutions company.
Best of all, proceeds from the Cape May Cares: Stompin’ Hurricane Sandy benefit concert go to the direct relief of Hurricane Sandy victims here in New Jersey. So you’ll have a great time and know you’re lending a hand to people who need it.
Tickets are available for $20 the night of the benefit at Cape May Convention Hall. If you plan to pay be check, make it payable to the Kiwanis NJ Foundation. For more information, call            (855) 708-9699       or             (609) 884-9563      .

Delila Sculpture Now on Display at Emlen Physick Estate

Delila Sculpture Now on Display at Emlen Physick Estate

CAPE MAY – Shown here with MAC Curator Elan Zingman-Leith, a new treasure graces the mantel in the formal parlor of Cape May's Victorian House museum, the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate - a bronze bust of Delila, from the biblical story of Samson and Delilah. The sculpture once belonged to Dr. Physick and was donated this fall to the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) by Dr. Physick's heirs, the Brooks family.

The sculpture is by renowned French sculptor Emmanuel Villanis (1858-1914), who was born in Lille, France, studied fine arts in Italy, then lived and worked as a sculptor in Paris. Villanis produced about 250 bronzes in his lifetime and is one of the most prolific sculptors of the late 19th and early 20th centuries in France. The bust of Dalila, circa 1900, is displayed on the mantle in the formal parlor, flanked by two small bronze female busts. This is an appropriate location for it, Zingman-Leith said, considering the Physick family had the formal parlor redecorated in 1900 in the prevailing French style.

"Real items that actually belonged to the inhabitants of the house keep the Physick Estate from becoming clichéd about Victorian life," said Zingman-Leith. "The unexpected artifact shows how varied and interesting 19th century life is."

The Brooks family donated the sculpture to MAC along with other items that belonged to the Physick family, including silver flatware, a large silver ladle, a silverplate egg warmer, kitchen cookery, two pictures of Dr. Physick and his sister, and others.

"These items enable us to talk about the lives that were led in this house, not just in general, but in particular, with the actual items that Dr. Physick owned," said Zingman-Leith. "They help illustrate Dr. Physick's position, his family, his social status, his inherited belongings, the technology available to him, and many other themes."

Cape May, The Perfect Place to Spend Thanksgiving away from Home

This year many of us living in New Jersey  Shore and  the Cape May local areas have many things to be thankful for.

This year, instead of over spending on over the top gifts and expensive dinners, we plan to make a donation to our favorite charity and local animal rescue service. And this year, we plan to keep it simple and be thankful for the small things in life, spend times with our loved ones and take a brisk walk on the Cape May beaches to help renew and revitalize our spirit.
